    Step 1: call tech support
Step 2: Say "I would like you to put windows 7 on my computer.
    Step 3: Pay the man
Step 4: You can now use your computer

Welcome to the wonderful world of Windows 8. I'm like you, I hate it! Too many commercial apps that I really don't want and don't like. The best I can do is recommend just playing around with it. I did finally find the task manager app and use it far more than the opening screen. Windows 8 for Dummies s a good source of help as well. I'm still customizing the start screen to my liking.

Yeah, the grandson is an excellent plan too.

I've used Windows 8 as well. If I use a Windows machine I prefer to use Windows 7. I would see if there is an option to change from Windows 8 back to Windows 7. There is Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 but most people cannot see the difference. If you are a power user and know how to use Windows 7 without the mouse, there are ways to do the same thing with Windows 8 and 8.1. For example, pressing CTRL-SHIFT-ESC brings up the task manager. This works for Windows 7 as well. Once you have the task manager up you can use it to open an MSDOS Prompt (execute cmd.exe) then do everything from the MSDOS Prompt.

It has been a while but I think you can also open the task manager then use it to run explore.exe. Then you have the standard Windows Explorer.

I like that microsoft are doing their best to make my $2000 machine feel like a $300 tablet.

    Edit: Or a $150 phone.

I have always felt that MicroSoft goes in waves of 3:
    Win 3 - good
    Win 3.1 - good
    Bob - crap
    Win 95 - good
    Win 98 - good
    Win ME - utter crap
    Win 2000 - good
    Win XP - good
    Win Vista - crap
    Win 7 - good
Win 8 - crap (ok, so someone at MS lost count!)

And remember - MicroSoft will release something that doesn't suck the day they release a vacuum cleaner.
And on the eighth day, God said, "OK, Murphy, you take over"

Um, what the heck is Bob? Where is Win 3.11, Win 98 SE, Win NT 3.5 and Win NT 4?

OK, so I had to fudge the releases a little. But you have to admit that every-so-often they release a total dog of an operating system (and other software too, but the O/S sticks in my mind).

Proof that dolphins are smarter than humans: there is not one recorded case of a dolphin installing Windows 8.

"The font Comic Sans was created for (but not used in) Microsoft Bob[17] and is still a popular—though often reviled—font today" What else can I say but "LOL"?
