    Old weird gear!

So a few of us up at the shop have noticed lately that an abundance of customers have been coming in lately looking to resurrect some of their old gear that probably deserves to be placed in a museum somewhere. Some under the "classic" title and some under the "that's so weird I can't believe they even made that" title. I got to thinking and figured I would ask everyone on the forum. What is the weirdest or oldest thing you have seen that people are still using and probably should have retired a long time ago?

Do they still make beavertail wetsuits? When I went to sign up for my certification, someone was dropping one off
Rock on, go big or go home, hit the ground running, hang in there kitty... don't eat the yellow snow...

Where do I start Joey? How about the Nautilus CVS? Dacor brought this out in the late 70's.It was a hard pack BCD that was essentially a water tank that you added water to until you were neutral. To keep the thing from collapsing, it had a diaphragm on the power inflator to keep the air in the chamber the same psi as the water. It would then "fart" as you ascended.

And then, there was the"Sea Voice" (their flyer actually had "Now Hear This!!!" on it). At least it wasn't very pricey - $20 The idea was to fill it about half way with air, pull it somewhat taught and talk with. You could usually get 2-3 sentences out before you had to put your reg back in to keep from re-inhaling too much CO2.

In the vintage and still usable department: I have my first regulators: Both UK built Nemrods: The Snark II and The Meteor. The meteor was interesting not only for the square diaphragm but it also had a variable pressure cut off J-valve incorporated into the first stage. The deeper you were, the higher the PSI would cut off. If I remember right, at 30' it was 500psi, at 60' it was 750psi and 90' it was 900psi.

I see the beaver tails around from time to time. I actually still sell one that is for spearfishing. Its weird but people love them. The Scuba Voice seems scary to say the least. I wonder how many people hyperventilated themselves with those over the years. If I can remember back a few years ago, we had a customer that brought one of those Nautilus CVS BCD's in the shop to replace the band. Needless to say I didn't have the part for him. That's pretty cool though.
    Thanks,
    Joey

The Sea Voice died a quick death. Not many sold and they really didn't work that well. I'm going to have to see what other weird gear I still have in my locker. I'm sure I have some more from the years.

Navy rules. You have some of the coolest stuff.

I've only been doing this for 14 years. I so wish I found scuba back when I was 20 something.

I still dive Scubapro MK3, Mk5, R108HP, R109 and a Kirby Morgan KMB-8. The Scubapro regs were made in the 70s and they stopped making the KMB-8 in 1969. All of these are VERY easy to service myself and are in like new condition. I also still use a steel 72 made in 1965.
