Typically lighthouses are a land based item. However if you have an open bottom SMB you can shine a light up into it that will illuminate the entire thing at night.

Size matter but you also have to take into consideration that you have to dive with it. I want my SMB to be able to inflate by purging a reg under it. This makes it easy and quick to inflate and shot. You also don't want to be blowing up a big one.

Other thing to take into consideration are strobes on night dive. A strobe can be seen from a much greater distance. Also in the US the USCC can pick see a strobe from a good distance with night vision.

One thing I would do if in a current and couldn't find the boat would be to inflate a SMB right away and shot it using a reel or spool. Just remember you want 1.5 times the amount of line as the depth your at.

I'm a palm beach drift diver. So the boat follows a float towed by somebody in the party. If I need to surface before the float diver, I shoot a fat 5 or 6 footer before I leave the bottom. Crew makes note of my position and can go on doing their thing.
