How to clean a second stage?

While changing some hoses on my reg I noticed a type of scale on the mouth piece. It was clear and thin and kind of reminded me of dead skin after a sun burn. When I looked closer, inside the opening of the reg, on the bottom was a hard brown scale. It was hard enough that it didn't scrape off well but when I wet a q-tip it did dissolve and dirty the tip.

Does anybody have any ideas what it is?

After my last trip I gave it a 24 hour soak in the tub and hung it to dry. Right now it is soaking in de-ionized water.

I would like to give it a good clean/disinfect but pine-sol is probably not the way to go. What suggestions do you have?

The only suggestion I can give is maybe a weak listerine solution.

-That or - Sell it on Ebay and get a new rig from Suba Toys????

Thanks Navy, I will give it a try.
I was adding a new Octo and all new hoses when I noticed it. Personally I blame Devildiver. It has to be his fault doesn't it?

Get the service manual (probably available on-line). Take it apart and use a vinegar solution to soak and then clean and rinse thouroghly with clean water. Reassemble and set the crack point. Actually simpler than it sounds.
    Abandon all hope ...

    The Devil always does it.

Turns out it was mold. After rinsing I normally hang them to dry, this time the reg sat on a shelf and water must have pooled in the bottom. YUCK.

I soaked it in de-ionized water, pulled the cover off and scrubbed with a toothbrush. Soaked it for 5 minutes in dilute listerine and scrubbed it again. Everything tastes minty fresh now.

    Thanks everybody.

I think that you missed an opportunity to justify buying a new regulator, to the better half.

You are aware that the EPA has a procedure in place for mold. You just better hope they aren't monitoring this forum.
