best Caribbean island for non-mobile person?

So which island do you guys think would work for someone on crutches? I am hoping to dive and then get back to the hotel in time to spend the rest of the day hanging with my hubby.

Wow. Now that's an interesting question. I really don't have a specific answer. I would suggest staying at a dockside resort where diving is the focus. They'll be best able to accomadate you and travel will be kept to a minimum.

That's what I was hoping to find. We were in Puerto Aventuras recently and it worked well that the dive op was right there. The hotel was small and our room was really close to the pool which was really close to the ocean. I was hoping for something like that in the Caribbean somewhere.

He doesn't dive so an island with other things to do than dive would be good.

I was going to say just go to Bonaire and dive the house reef or something but there's nothing there for a non-diver to do really.

Are you using a scooter or something?

He is the one on crutches. I will be doing the diving, hopefully. He has travelled with them before but really we need a place that is close to the dive sites, has a good pool (he spends hours in it or the ocean and it helps his hip) and is easy to manuever on crutches. The diving can just be ok, I just want to get wet. If the dive sites are close I can get back to the hotel before he gets up and around as he tends to sleep in on vacation.
As a side note, Grand Cayman is out because we are going there in April 08

Clarify a couple of points: (I also thought you had the crutches..)

Are you looking for a beach or just access to the ocean via a dock or similar? What other activities are you looking for? How is your husband on steps? I have a friend who's on crutches and he could almost play sports if he wanted to so a sense of how mobile your husband is would help.

I think it will come down to more specific resort recommendations rather than an generic island.

As an example Curacao's West End resorts would be brutal for your husband everything is 2-3 flights of stairs down to the water. Yet in town a resort like the Marriott might be perfectly fine, large pool area, protected beach just off a walkway and they have elevators from the lower level to the rooms/street level. It's kind of a sprawling property though so that's what prompted the mobility question....

I am wondering about Grand Turk? I can hardly say I have been on the island other than for a few short stops as I have stayed on Salt Cay.

Yes, you are right, looking for resort ideas and which island too. He has a really hard time on steps, but can walk a ways on level ground. Other activities like good snorkeling, maybe a casino, good restaurants. Access to the ocean from a beach would be best.
