Layering a shorty under a full suit?

I have a 5mm suit which is good for moxt of the year except for the extremes either end - a bit thin for winter, and a bit much for the back end of summer.

I'm thinking of getting a 3mm shorty to layer underneath in Winter, and use on it's own in Summer.

Is this sane or stupid? Anyone got any good shorty recomendations - I've heard about Sharkskins and Radiators, is the difference noticable?

    Thanks

Of course this is not stupid. The make hooded vests to layer. Putting on a shorty under a full wetsuit would be just like addid a core warmer with a little extra on the arms and legs. I see no problem with this, you'll just need more weight to sink ya.

I do this all the time.

I put my shorty on top of the full suit - it's a good way to get through spring and fall without having to buy a new suit.

Been there, done that-many times. My first Ice dives were in a 1/4" (6mm) high pants 2-piece with a shorty and a hooded vest and another hood with borrowed cold water gloves (the kind that have only 3 "fingers"-thumb in one and two fingers each in the other two.) I was warm enough, but really didn't want to do repetative dive later.

    Question

Would it be better to put the shorty over the full suit? Seems like it would work better this way.

I agree. I couldn't even fit another layer under my full suit. I usually use a hooded step in vest, which is a shorty with a hood, over my full suit. Although the other way is not wrong as long as it doesn't change the fit of the full suit and let water in.

Absolutely, this is a common practice and a good way to stay a little warmer without a big expense.
