    Question Rescue Diver Requirements

I looked on the PADI website, but could not find much information. Can anyone give me a link or some info for what is required to get this CERT these days.

    Thanks,

    Mike

Usually with PADI the only requirement is a valid credit card. LOL.

You need your advanced card. CPR and first aid must be current and you must be 15 years old. I would suggest taking the PADI Emergency First Responders Course. It will cover the CPR and first aid as well as AED's and Oxygen provider.

Having taken the Padi course I can say the postings which actually told you about the course were right on target as to what's needed. Beyond that I'd tell you that if you've ever taken a Red Cross CPR/First Aid course you'll find the EFR course a bit odd. I'm not sure I agree with all their techniques by the way, such as beginning CPR without actually checking for a pulse. The Red Cross pounds it into your head that you never do that, checking for a pulse is always done.

The EFR way assumes that without breathing you will have no pulse, which is correct after a period of time. The Red Cross teaches rescue breathing for when you have a pulse but no breathing.

Either way, the EFR course is interesting and will teaching you things that can save a life, plus you can get the AED stuff from it.

In other words, if all you've ever done was Red Cross courses then pay attention in class because there are subtle differences in what they teach.

EFR or CPR is a prereq. There is class and several pool sessions. Then a handful of open water rescue and emergency scenarios. You also have to do an emergency plan for your dive. At least this is what was required at my LDS when I took it this summer. It is a helpful class, especially if you don't have prior first aid training or experience. You alos get to do some cool excercises to subdue a dive in distress, kind of like wrestling, that was the most fun.

EFR or CPR are required to pass the course, but they are not prerequisites. Most shops I've heard of teach you your EFR/CPR cert as an additional part of the course if you are not already certified.

So all you need to take Rescue is AOW and some money.

Not all agencies require AOW prior to Rescue, Padi does and is in fact one of the few that do I'm told. There is another thread about whether or not AOW is needed and a couple posters there say their agencies do not require it.

Can someone clarify for PADI, is CPR required or is "EFR" required?
