Not too long ago I had to correct an instructor in La Jolla when I overheard him say to his students, "that is an accident waiting to happen". I was just getting ready for a beach dive by myself when I heard this, so I asked him if he ever went solo, and more to the point, (out of earshot from his students), if he ever thought he was soloing while teaching. I have redundant systems where his backup in being carried by a student. Gave him pause for thought.

You need to believe in karma. A-holes like that tend to have more flat tires than most people.

You also have to believe in nails.

Completely. Besides, accidents happen all the time. I mean, you wouldn't believe how often deserving people just happen to fall down the stairs, repeatedly.

I've had a similar but more polite reaction from an instructor when doing simple skills dives in a very controlled area; he just asked that I not enter and exit from the area reserved for his LDS training sessions so I just moved around the lake that day. Now I typically go during the week when there are no classes there.

How can an LDS reserve an entry spot? Entry points are typically the easiest spots so they are used by the majority of divers.

I would tell them, "too bad" and proceed with my dive.

A teachable moment lost.

At some of the scuba only parks around here, the LDS can pay for a pavilion and dock reserved for their current and former students. That's why I didn't have a problem honoring his request.

Me too. Adults and anyone old enough to be trusted in the water with scuba gear is mature enough, or should be, to just deal with the fact that there are solo divers, get used to it. N

You know... Not the most advanced diver here, but I have and will continue to dive solo if there is not a buddy around. Now do I like diving with a buddy, you bet your primary reg on it! But if I can't get someone to go diving with me, I at the least, have someone on shore know that I am diving, put up a flag, and take my dive VERY cautiously. Thus the reason that I have a pony bottle, for the OH S&#%, I didn't pay attention to my air pressure, and the beeping from my dive computer, or my watch, or the fact that my reg was getting harder to breath from or... murphy came out and smacked me in the side of the head with a brick or... my primary reg / octo took a dump on me or... you all get the point right...? I was out at CSSP with Blaze and Lacroix, and when I pulled up, they were just chilling cause Blaze had an issue, and Lacroix was gonna abort diving for the day (correct me if I am wrong ya'll), but we buddyed up, and took a short dive (in which I could NOT get past 38 feet cause it was TOO cold) and then surfaced. LaCroix still had enough air to stay down for a bit longer, as did I, but after getting turned around trying to get to the plane, and then nearly freezing to death at 38 feet, I was done for then. They packed up and headed home, and my buddy that came with me (who is a red-backed tube sucker ) watched me as I stayed around 25 feet or so. I think that the rum is making me rant at this point so I will shut up.....
