To be fair, Tex said he rechecks everything - he just does it underwater. It seems people missed that part. This isn't about taking off blind and skipping the final check, it's about where to do that final check.

Some checks can be done better at depth than on the surface. Tech divers are taught to do a bubble check immediately after descent, as well as S-drills and valve drills. I guess solo divers would skip the S-drill. You should also verify you can reach all your clips and gear under water. Being able to reach them on the surface or on land doesn't guarantee that. And check all your lights are operational and not flooded.

My point is describing what I do and why. I am saying I do not submerge then resurface. Some may have missed this point. I also perform checks as I descend. I did not say that someone has done something incorrectly or there is a better way to do something. I am posting my personal experience (What the OP originally asked about). It has nothing to do with how someone else performs.

CMBurch: "At the surface, I always do some adjusting (compass, gun,"""

Agree 100%-gotta have the gun ready and loaded before going underwater for that grouper looking up from the bottom etc.etc....

I think all are in agreement to following any DM when with a group and also following any boat captains rules. yep, we all want to go again...

When on your own boat or going from shore, solo, no group with DM etc. it's always a personal choice on everything....

I don't see anyone in disagreement...

Oh, My personal opinion if alone or on my boat is to get to the bottom asap (sometimes slower if fish are visible below) and carry the gun loaded under the water and shoot quick....lol...

I've found that most charters, though they brief you to signal once in the water...I rarely see the deck hand paying much attention to what's in the water.
They're usually too busy getting the next set of divers in thwe water.

I agree with the posts that a negative entry may be called for depending on conditions. But striding in negative with a set of steel doubles is hairy. Everyone who has been diving any length of time at all has forgotten something.

I work in a fairly dangerous industry (towers) and in meeting with our Workers Compensation providers they tell us that, at least in the tower industry, it is not the green tower hand that is likely to fall - but the tower hand who has been climbing for a year or so and has gotten "comfortable" climbing around at 300', but haven't been around quite long enough to have a coworker fall or have a close call themselves.

I expect the same is true with divers.
