I don't hold a solo card but do have a few tec certs. that go well beyond a solo card.

I know SDI/TDI have a solo class I think it's through their SDI side.

Solo diving is more then just having a backup air source. It's being able to deal with anything that can happen underwater by yourself.

There is no scuba police. No one has to "allow" anything.

Unless you're on someone else's boat and they have a specific policy on the matter. Then you're at their mercy.

But no, a tech cert is not a solo cert. There's really not much, if anything, you would learn in a solo course that tech courses haven't already covered, generally, but it's still not the same thing.

Solo certs are pretty new, and, I suspect, a direct reaction to this litigious society. If an operator can say "Hey, the diver was certified to dive solo, so we let 'em" they stand less chance of being successfully sued.

I hold a recreational DM card and tech Adv. Trimix card. I solo dive 80% of the time as it's hard to get my reg. together. Is a Ice Diver card required to dive under ice....heck no it's something with proper gear and appopreate skills one can master on their own....just as Solo Diving is for sure.

I know there is no scuba police but having a cert card would if I'm not mistaken make insurance issues easier and alow you to do whatever you want without people hassling you.

I am still interested in doing a solo course but it will have to wait a while considering I have done a BSAC Compressor Operator, DSAT Gasblender and an Equipment course this week.

I have mixed opinions on this. Yes, solo is not hard/complicated. In fact, in my opinion its a subset of most tec training. Its something that can be learned with a mentor or via a 'good' class. I am not sure its something that I'd recommend just going out an trying. (that said, most people who do solo with or without training, live through it. Its the cases where the feces hits the fan that you see the difference).

I most assureadly don't think a solo cert should be required to solo. I do think more needs to be taught to divers about solo and why there is more to it than they initially think.

Totally agree in_cave. The SDI solo is a good course and it is a good stepping off point. The real learning starts when you start diving solo. It's a whole different mindset. definitely not for the toss the gear on and go set. It definitely makes me think a lot more before going on what would be considered an easy dive as far as planning.
