Heads up for Aussies thinking about Micronesia

I was recently chatting with the Continental Airlines manager here in Cairns. She tells me the twice weekly Cairns-Guam route has a better than even-money chance of being axed. Apparently the decision will be made before December. Like myself, I know heaps of Aussies are regulars to Palau, Truk and Guam and will be devastated if this service is scrubed. If you've never done Truk or Palau, exchange rates have never been better - do it now! Lets keep the service flying! You can even get wet in Cairns on the way through!

Any word on the flights? Also we went from Cairns to Guam to Yap where the Manta Rays live and had great diving. My dght is there for 2 yrs with the Peace Corps. I want to surprise her for her birthday with a dive computer. Do you know if those small islands have Nitrox?

The flights will remain until at least December 08, after that - who knows? Yap Divers provide free 32% fills...as do the main operators in Palau. Guam was not expensive from memory, but that may have been in comparison to the outrageous prices being charged at Truk Lagoon for EAN.

Heard yesterday the Qld government has offered some type of incentive to CO to keep the service running. Apparently the Guam-Bali and Guam-Hong Kong service are being axed shortly.

Check this LDS in Guam, and I do NOT work for them, but they are the best on the island.

Amazing how things can change in just a few short months. Since Qantas has withdrawn from the Cairns to Japan market, commencing March 12, Continental will increase their flights to 4 a week ex Cairns to Guam (targeting the mainly Japanese oncarriage). The new schedule allows direct connections to Truk/Pohnpei on Mondays and Fridays, but still needs the 12 hour layover for Palau/Yap.
