I did a week at Wananavu. It was pretty small, secluded. I would definately go back! Here's the view from my room. My advatar is the view from my room at Castaway Resort. It's nice too, but much larger, which you're trying to avoid.

You'll spend about the same for a resort hotel, maybe a bit more on the flight.
Diving: The Coolidge, Million Dollar point and way more.

Sailaway cruises operates a 40' trimaran for daytrips from Port villa. (probaply cheapest but best option in Port Villa) Nautilus operates from Port Villa and also offers accomodation.

Vanuatu Diving Resort and Allan Power operate from Luganville (Coolidge) and offer accomodation.
Aquamarine Santo also offers trips to the Coolidge.

how about this place:
Dive Kadavu
a little more rustic than the big resorts, but it has gotten decent reviews.

I just saw this thread and I'm probably too late to help, but Matava Resort on Kadavu is clean, great food and no A/C.

I recommend Garden Isle Resort in Taveuni. It's a smaller resort with a great dive operation and diving the somosom straits, especially the white wall, is awesome!

If you are interested in going there, you can book direct through their representatives in the us: aquatrek.com
