Just went through the refresher after an 8 year layoff and it was worth the money, however as mentioned before $200 is steep. I did mine through my LDS for $75. Check some other shops in your area to see if that is a standard rate. Good luck and welcome back.

I think that if you are asking about it, it's a good idea to do it. It will increase your confidence and therefore your degree of comfort when you prepare for your first fun dive after your long hiatus.

I work with a fair number of review students who, like you, are doing some vacation diving after a time away from it. I'm in the middle of working with a review student who's been out of the water for 4 years and has about 20 dives. We've done a pool session and she'll go for a couple of ocean dives tomorrow. She got back into the groove pretty quickly in the pool, but really appreciated the chance to refresh her skills and techniques. The ocean dives will be icing on the cake, and she'll jump on her liveaboard full of confidence.

The cost of the course depends a lot on what's included. If you get a theory review with materials, if there are boat dives and not just a one-hour confined water session, if it's private and not in a group setting (standards in my agency allow for 10 review students per instructor), if gear rental is included, expect the cost to reflect the added services and goods. I teach review sessions here for about $75 one on one, including equipment rental and pool time. If I take people out on a boat for two dives, it costs about $170, including equipment.

What would they charge you for doing an advanced course, probably not much difference between the two, as long as the Instructor knows you haven't been diving for a while and can give you a little bit of extra time/help. At least then you've got something for your money.

As a DM I work with folks fairly often doing Scuba Reviews (refreshers). My shop recommends I charge $40.00. Unless there is a cost for the pool, I never charge anything. Most folks fall back into it quickly. I spend enough time with them to review the 20 "Skills for evaluation" (PADI) and until they feel comfortable. I usually get a fair tip.

Any good diver can help you out. After all you are a certified diver already. If you seek out a DM it should not cost a lot.
