I heard good things about Silent World but have never dived with them. You can find Chris the owner on thedecostop

Conch Republic is a great shop that I dived with a few times and would highly recommend them to both rec. and tec. divers. I have done single tank reef dives and tec. dives with them.

was your daughter's course private?
My daughter did her OW dives mid-week, and was the only one doing the dives at that time, so in effect it was private. However, we didn't request that. I've found that taking lessons in various sports mid-week often has limited participants. so it often becomes a private lesson at group rates.

It's good to read all these positive comments about Silent World. My son and I have a couple dives booked with them to the Benwood Wreck (shallow non-penetration wreck) and French Reef two weeks from tomorrow. This will be my son's first boat and ocean dives. It'll probably become almost impossible to get him back in the local quarries after this trip.

And scubagirl...have them take you to French Reef. That reef has a site called Christmas Tree Cave...seems fitting for your Christmas dives dont' ya think.

The Benwood "wreck" is more like a nice size pile of rubble now... still attracts a lot of life! We saw eagle rays and dolphins the last time I dove it!

Yeah, that's the impression I got from some of the pics I've seen. We specifically asked for it tho because of some articles we've read about the sealife there. I'm hoping my son gets to see something like the eagle rays, sharks, dolphins, etc. his first ocean dive...but, anything will be a win, given his only previous dives being the local quarries. I pretty much have my mind set on only a 30-minute first dive this trip, while I watch him suck down a tank of air at record pace...you should have seen his increased consumption from just seeing a 4 ft. paddlefish in the quarry the first time.

Sorry for the hijack...I now return you to your regularly scheduled dive op thread.

While it's just the bottom of the hull it attracts good sea life. It's a great easy dive and I never seen any current there . I have snorkeled the Benwood before or should I say free dived because I didn't have a snorkel.

I don't know if it's already set, but if you can, ask for Molasses as a second dive it never disappoints. But if he sucked down a tank in record time watching a paddlefish, I'd hate to see his bottom time when the huge Goliath groupers begin to thump at him for being too close

Anyhow it will be all good... Take some pictures if you can!

We just got back from our Keys trip last weekend, and am sorry to report we had a disappointing experience with Silent World. My only advice is to confirm how many have booked for the days you have scheduled to dive. If it's only a couple of you, then they might shift you to what I considered a very second rate boat. It was my son's first ocean dives, and he was not comfortable going out on that boat. We blew off the dive and drove back to the shop to discuss it with them, only to be treated very rudely by the one staff member on duty that morning. The owner left a rambling ten minute message on my voice mail, informing me, in what I considered an arrogant fashion, just how much of a "top operator" he is, and how "lucky" we were that he even opened the shop that day because buisness was so light...little focus on us as the customer...just a lotta tooting his own horn. I was very unimpressed, to say the least.

Last Easter weekend I dove on silent world with my son and daughter. This was my Daughter's first boat dive and she got seasick on the boat. The captain and DM were very supportive and helpful. The only negative was some confusion where the weights we needed (we had the rest of gear) were on the boat or at the store.
