Fun games to play with the kids!
We were camping last weekend, and I found lots of pine cones. Unbeknown to the kids, over the course of the weekend, I collected a few in various sizes. The night we got home, I put them all in a bag, and tucked them away (except the smallest one). Then I got out an old bottle of dried Oregano and put a few pinches in a small container. I got the kiddos together, and explained that I would teach them how to "grow" one of these pine cones. I put that little pine cone in a lunch sack, opened the container of "magic food", and showed them how to feed it. Every couple of nights, after they're asleep, one of my nightly chores is to remember to take out the smaller pine cone, and replace it with the next bigger one. We're three cones into this game, and my kids are absolutely amazed! They beg to check on it, and feed it! They can't believe these things actually grow! I have three more, then I have some of the HUGE ones we picked up in North Carolina last summer. Those things are probably from 8" to 10" long. I'm gonna have to buy some bigger lunch sacks, because these cones are going to outgrow the ones we have. It'll be worth it though.

Sounds like great fun. I think you can ge the woody cones to open if you use a BBQ or camp fire, then the kids can see what the seeds look like too. I wouldn't leave them on the grill un attended, and no more than ten minutes.

Yep, some parts are edible. Ever heard of Euell Gibbons? ![]() If you're anywhere close to my age, you surely remember Euell. Think Grape Nuts. Thanks for taking me back in time there for a minute! ![]() |
