Smokers - How Does Smoking Effect Your Diving?
This question is aimed at only smokers/former smokers.
I've seen divers literally finish a smoke then jump in and dive. This weekend, I spoke to my buddy about this (he's a smoker). He mentioned that during his OW class, while the other students were below doing skills on the platform, he and another on the surface pulled cigarettes from their BC pockets (in water-tight containers) and lit-up until it was their turn. Now, THAT, is an addiction. FYI...his SAC rate was better than mine, and I don't smoke. So, you tobacco fiends, how does smoking effect you, dive-wise?

I haven't noticed much difference in my SAC since quitting over a year ago. Smoking is obviously no good for your health, but I haven't seen much first-hand evidence that it makes much difference diving.
FWIW though, I used to have a smoking buddy who would pop a piece of nicotine gum before each dive, so he wouldn't have to go 45 minutes without.

I haven't noticed a difference. When we went to Spain a couple of weekends ago I smoked one right before I jumped in. The only thing I REALLY worry about is flying after diving. But on the flip side of that I have a friend that has done many dives as little as 3 hours before a flight.
I am going to try and stop smoking again soon. Life is just WAY too stressful right now. I know it is an excuse but it is my excuse. Any time any one wants my shoes for a week I would gladly give them to you. I agree with DaneM the only time I see a decline in performance is when I am not hitting the gym the way I want or working out at home.
