I kept a 3.85 unweighted GPA in high school (higher than 4.0 when weighted) and my parents only paid for half of a car....
Still it was a good deal. And they didn't do diddly squat for the 4.0 I've kept this first year at college... I pay for insurance and gas...for my car and my diving...Get her to get a job at a dive shop so she can get you free gas for diving! Maybe next summer? |

I kind of surpised my self when I made the deal. Yet please that she came through.
Are you at Florida? That is her motovation now to maintain the grades. She did a soccer clinic up there last year and has attended some football games. During her clinic she met Tebow. (Be still my beating heart )One of her OW/surfing buddies got a job as a deck hand with op that did their open water. At 16 I thought that was cool. Now he is a guide. He works weekends, but can dive for free anytime. Including fills plus gets a Scubapro keyman discount. That is Very Cool. I can see my daughter at the Divers Direct shop. They do nitrox now.

To follow-up SplitLip's remark. Nitrox/EANx requires special training and certification to use when diving. It's normally about a four-hour course, and requires a written test and demonstration that you can evaluate the contents of a tank to determine its mixture. Nitrox (higher thatn 21% oxygen) permits longer bottom times and may reduce possibility of DCI/DCS.
Or, are you joking with us, and my sarcasm meter is broken? ![]()

I work at Ginnie Springs north of Gainesville, and getting to dive for free and free air is sweet. We don't have anything but EAN21 though.... Divers Direct has a location in Orlando, correct? I think I went there once, but they couldn't fill my buddy's tank, and refused to fill mine because the dip tube had fallen off (I have bad luck with those. two or three of them have fallen off of my tanks, and always about a week after a vip. No way in heck am I busting down my doubles to fix a dip tube...) I never went back. I know a guy who works there, and he's a bit of a jerk. But he must make good money, he always leaves his car engine running after dives while he's breaking down his gear.... I'm sure your daughter is nicer and better looking than he is Send her down to UCF! |

If she does not get into Florida, her second choice is Central Florida.
I have been to to all the Divers Direct shops. The West Palm shop is better than the others. The manager is tops. Divers Direct is more a sales outlet than a service dive in that they really don't service equipment. Their "bench" is limited to testing and prepping new regs; adjusting IP and such. They send everything out for rebuilds and the like. The last reg I bought from them was the oct inflator my kid uses. It was free flowing a bit and I could not figure out how to adjust it. I brought it back and they handed me new one.

Oh but goodness, if she's 16....it'll be another year or two before she graduates highschool, right? Man....I'll be 3/4 of the way through college by then...
But hey, if you all ever come over to look at the campus, shoot me a pm! I can show ya'll around and if you bring dive gear and come at a time when the lake boat house isn't open, I can show you the wreck of Lake Claire! (if staff is there, they'd complain about it, since you all aren't students and whatnot. But if they aren't there, they won't. I know some of the staff pretty well but every once in a while I go there when someone who doesn't know me is there, and then I usually have to haul out my C-cards and prove to them I can dive...and it's just a mess...we are allowed to dive, but they don't have any protocol to follow, so they make it up as they go. And some of them make up more than others.) As far as Diver's Direct, I can get just as good prices at ST, and better service. I don't plan to go back. Too far from campus to justify it. The shop close by, half the employees don't know how to fill doubles, but they are nicer and don't give me grief about stuff ![]() |
