To remember those who lost their life. To honor those who gave so much in courage and heroism in the moments after. To comfort those who still feel the pain of loss or grief. To remind those who were younger and did not understand. I will not forget......

I was working for Pepsi Bottling Group and servicing the Inland Travel Center (large truck stop) on Hwy, 27. Someone said there was a report on the television of a plane that had hit one of the two towers. It sounded like a pure accident. We went to the rest area where there are booths to eat at and TV's mounted. As we were watching the broadcasts from the different networks on the many TV's, the second plane appeared on the cameras. I can remember one of the news anchors saying, "O my God, another plane just hit the World Trade Center." We continued to watch for some time and I then remember Bryant Gumbel saying, "We've just learned that the Pentagon has been hit." I thought, we must be at war for someone to hit the Pentagon. I tried my best to finish my route and get home. I didn't want to do anything for a few days. It was the strangest emotion.

I remember we were all standing around a tv in one of the conf. rooms at work. The company president had just come out of a meeting and was angry that everyone was just standing there watching a television. I waved him over to watch just about the time the second plane hit. We all stood there watching for a long time, later with our mouths hanging open as the buildings began their collapse. He sent everyone home early after that. Traffic moved slowly along, with stunned faces everywhere you turned.

Lost my brother that day. He was a firefighter and died when the north tower came down.
I've often wondered if he was still in the tower because he never got the order to evacuate, or if he ignored the order, to be sure everyone else was out first. He was that kind of guy, who would be the last man out. I've met many firefighters who were that kind of guy. RIP all who were lost that day. |
