If you are are fat and eat typical breakfast...

As I was waking up this morning, and eating my typical vegetarian breakfast, I became curious of the actual caloric intake of the fat people dominating our society and health care costs:

Typical American breakfast:
  • 2 Fried Eggs - 180 calories
  • 3 Slices of Pork Bacon - 103 calories
  • 1 English Muffin / Butter - 164 calories
  • 3 Ounces of Hash Browns - 359 calories
  • 2 Cups of Coffee (w/ cream) - 49 calories
  • 6 ounces of Orange Juice - 84 calories
This morning I had my typical bowl of oatmeal, sliced banana, and 1/3 cup of orange juice. I was pleasantly full, and find these food choices very tasty in the morning.

Oatmeal: 88 calories
Orange Juice 1/3 cup: 30 calories
Banana: 72 calories

Typical American Breakfast: 939 Calories
My simple vegetarian breakfast: 190 calories

In a year: Typical American Breakfast: 343,000 Calories
My vegetarian breakfast: 69,000 calories

Difference = 274,000 calories just for breakfast choice
1 pound of fat: 3500 calories

The difference is 78 pounds of fat in a year, due to breakfast choice alone.

Now, if you excuse me, I interrupted my breakfast of a six-stack of buttermilk pancakes, dripping with whole butter and syrup to make this post. Biscuits and gravy are almost cooked, too.

//my typical breakfast: cereal with 2% milk -- 200 calories
//typical lunch: half can of soup: 100 - 150 calories

Anything similar for lunch? I eat bad because of lack of time and grabbing a burger and fries is really convenient.

Not sure that's really a "typical" breakfast. Perhaps if someone is eating at IHOP or something, but in our day and age of convenience, it's probably more like a package of pop tarts, a granola bar or a bowl of cereal.

I know for under 300 calories, I can eat an Egg McMuffin and a Diet Coke at McDonalds, which is fewer calories than 1 bagel from Panera.

I also know that the Oatmeal I have right here at my cubicle is 140 calories for 1 serving, which is pretty meager. Heck, 1/2 cup of Quaker Oats is 140 calories as well, so you are either eating about a tablespoon of oatmeal, or.....

Well most Americans cant eat a typical breakfast because they are working too much and just rush from one place to another.
Which is a shame because breakfast should be the biggest meal of the day.

That is not a typical breakfast by any means, if you do the research most overweight people skip breakfast. I am also a vegetarian and was a vegan for 3 years and I actually gained all of my weight when I switched to being a vegetarian. I am considering starting to eat meat again to help jump start my weight loss. Don't be so judgemental without all of the facts. Not to say that the American diet doesn't suck, but to think it is as simplistic as you have laid it out to be is, well, simple.

In a pinch, I will opt for Wendy's baked potatoes. They are small so it takes 2. Skipping the butter and just adding lots of scallions makes lunch palatable. Calories about 240 x 2 = 480. Potatoes are a near ideal food....the complex carbohydrate encased in fiber releases sugars at a slow rate, and sustains satiety for a good long while.

The best option that I frequently fail to do is to pack the nutritious and filling food I WANT to eat.

A bag of veggies to snack on, and to avoid the "gorging instinct" is almost essential to avoid a quick "Pizza Hut pizza buffet, or a quick Hot Fudge Sundae" lapse.

Of course I think occasional lapses are fun and worthwhile, but should stay 'lapses' not habits.

I googled "typical american breakfast calories" and got that as an example. If you visit IHOP or Shoney's (and such) in the mornings, you often will see at least this amount being eaten.

Oatmeal calories computed at: CalorieKing - Calorie Counter - Calories in Breakfast Cereals, Cooked: Oats, regular & quick & instant, cooked, no salt

You would have to WORK very hard to put on weight with a vegan diet! Soy products should be used in moderation...perhaps this accounts for your atypical weight gain as a one-time vegan.

We have an obesity epidemic among 'typical american meal eaters',

not vegans and vegetarians.

It's really no wonder, is it?

I thought carbs were evil? Right now I am skipping fried foods and processed sugars and am loosing weight. I can loose weight fairly easily but my main problem is that after I cheat once or twice I just go back to all my old habits and start packing it back on.
