The hurricane and gas
I was wondering how gas prices are holding up in everyone's area? Someone on the local news last night said that they were shutting down all the refineries (which they aren't) but this still caused a panic. This caused gas to jump from $3.30ish a gallon to around $4.50 a gallon at several stations. Is anyone else experiencing anything similar. I think that it is just people in this part of the country tend to panic over nothing. They mention snow flurries on the news and the next day the stores are out of bottled water, bread, etc.. because everyone flips out.

its ridiculous, the oil market works on speculation from what I understand, and people buy expecting the gas price to be X next week, I kinda in a way hope the market tanks in this way, because some buy barrels on credit, but the people of this country dont help matters either (myself included before Katrina I rushed to the pump too.)

Prices here in Ottawa jumped $0.13/litre overnight (from $1.18 to $1.31 - $CAN). A quick back of the envelope calculation converts to a 50cent jump from $4.49 to $5.09 ($CAN) or to $5.45/gal ($US). All this while the price of crude oil has dropped to its lowest point in months (~$100/bl).
Excuse me while I go cry a bit and try to comfort my wallet. |

This afternoon when I drove by the gas station on base it was showing 3.71, thats about $.30 up from a few days ago. Fortunately for me my truck has two tanks and I fill them both up tuesday morning in anticipation for just such an event. I've got about two weeks worth of gas in my truck at my current rate of usage so I'm not too worried about current prices.

Prices here were at $3.40/gal before Gustav.
When Gustav pointed towards LA, it went up overnight to $3.55 When Ike news said the word "refinery" in it yesterday, it went up to $3.69 at some stations yesterday. some stayed own at $3.55 avg. This morning, more "panic and specultion", some stations are at $3.99, but some down the street are still at $3.53, which I filled up at. Afterwards saw one at $3.45 for the cheap-gas stuff. |
