Our world is a hologram?

Wow, these guys are really digging deep. Anybody here have a basic understanding of quantum physics? Far fetched? It does make you think though.

That entire article was one giant "Huh?" on my part. I consider myself to be somewhat intelligent, but I had a hard time grasping any of that stuff.

Yeah that was a tough read, understood some of it.

Next thing they will discover, is that we are hooked up to machines and we are really in the matrix

Theory based on noise

The experimental noise that was reported is interesting and entirely consistent with the experience of any investigator taking measurements (of whatever). Increased sensitivity of detectors invites amplification of random or otherwise potentially irrelevant events (just like increasing the ISO on a camera lands a grainy appearance to an image). The question is, "how do we tell the difference between meaningless noise and the uncovering of an important meaning-rich signal?" The next question is, "if the signal is meaningful, then what is this meaning?" Dr. Hogan is still struggling with the first question. While waiting for that question to be resolved, however, it's always fun to mess around with the second question, which is what he has done.

Deriving an answer to the first question is unfortunately often difficult to achieve: "Can we make verifiable predictions based on the noise?" Stemming from confirmed predictions regarding the noise, we tend to build conceptual models that incorporate the now presumably meaningful signal. Dr. Hogan indeed seems to be having fun with the second question at the arguable expense of the first one (as noted above) but not entirely without justification. Power to his hypothetical model of the universe is lent by the fact that he predicted the noise -- advance prediction is an enormously powerful scientific instrument. Nevertheless, Dr. Hogan wisely seems to suggest that, while the experimental noise is not inconsistent with the holographic universe, such noise does not yet constitute evidence to this effect.

I would be interested in MSilvia's take on the article. I am also hopeful that, late this afternoon, the Universal analog of the event horizon of the black hole will conspire to approximate two holographs, one of me and the other of an icy beer.

Hopefully, the holograph will be layered so that it appears to be three dimensional; otherwise your beer might be flat.

yikes

mm_dm, you are right. It could be difficult remove the cap from a 2-dimensional beer. Nevertheless, when that golden elixir finally crosses the event horizon of the black whole that is my mouth, gravitational forces will be sufficiently strong that not even light beer can escape.

Touche'...I'll even join you just as soon as I can get the waitress to bring us a couple of Beckenstein's.

beer

Hang on, I am going to bend space-time such that we will be at the same table. I'll bring pickles.
