Are Computers and Cell Phones Necessary?

Now, how necessary are they for you?

For me, I don't need, nor really want a cell phone. When my current plan expires, I intend to drop one of our two phones. As for the computer, it has been my hobby since I assembled my first one in 1975 (Southwest Tech 6800 with 2K RAM). Besides, how else would I access porno?

I'm also a professional software developer (nearly 40 years) and I do it for fun (pro bono for non-profits).

Life has become too complicated. The computer and cell phone have become "necessities" to most folks. I remember when having a pager was high tech! I remember how to use a pay phone...sorry I guess I am dating myself.

very few things are "necessary." But practically speaking, things have changed to make not having these impractical. When's the last time you saw a pay phone?

Are they necessary? No.

If it weren't for my job, I would throw away the phone (Blackberry, actually) and never look back. The computer would be much harder to do without, but I have done it and it is quite liberating actually. Makes you actually spend time with yourself which for some may be a new experience...

It's very hard to separate the business component out of the equation, since so many of us are expected to be on call 24/7 via cell, text or email.

Additionally, there's the fact that a ton of folks added up the costs involved and dropped their land-lines, going totally cellular (and mobile) for much less, so they NEED those phones.

I don't have a cell phone but have really been thinking of getting one and droping my land line. I just don't need to be in contact all the time. A computer on the other hand I don't think I could do without. How could I edit my digital pictures? Trading stocks cost more if you have to talk to a person. I'd have to go to stores or call to order gifts. I also pay all my bills online so I'd have to buy stamps and use snail mail. I just don't think I would want to give up my computer.

I need my cell phone for long distance calls at home. As for needing a computer most of the things I do at move on a computer I can do at work or the library.

At this point I need a cell phone because I don't have a home phone. I would also have to relearn how to do banking without a computer.
