Boat

I have a question that sort of doesn't fit with a diving website, but could be wedged into a surface interval discussion, and I figure who better to ask than aquatic types. I'm looking for a boat for the family and found a 2002 Wellcraft 190 Excalibur that appears to be in good condition. It doesn't have a price listed, just a make offer. What would be a reasonable offer for this boat? There is a similar one from the same dealer that's a 21' that they're asking under 13k. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

check out ebay or search a boat classified for that type of boat and see what they are going for. check this out maybe it will help Used Boats and Personal Watercraft prices, values, specs and options at NADAguides I think the prices they give you are retail so it should be a little cheaper from a private party as well

I would check out boattrader.com for price comparisons. I haven't had much luck with the NADA boat guides; their car pricing seems right-on, but their boat pricing has always seemed lower than what boats / motors in my area actually go for. On the other hand, this might give you some good negotiating leverage if it does show a low value for the boat.

A Wellcraft is a very good brand of boat. I would look around at New Boats And Used Boats For Sale By Owner And From Dealers

Remember the prices you see are what people are asking, which may not reflect what they might actually be able to sell it for. The boating industry is very depressed and actual sale prices reflect it.

I've had many many boats, and have no idea about the value of that one. Hell, you could look it up as easy as I could.....you obviously have a computer. Once you buy it, though, you'll be wondering about how to set it up for scuba. Start a thread then, and it'll be fun!

I have in fact looked several places, but there's such a divergence in prices. I called and got an asking price that was about twice what I found anywhere else. I've been working on the wifey for a center console with plenty of room (for gear, etc.), but she's convinced that something like that wouldn't be a good "family" boat. I tell her if she starts diving it'd be a great "diving family" boat.

My advice: never buy a used boat without taking it to, or having a qualified and trusted mechanic look it over thoroughly.

Have to agree with the wifey on this one. Bought a 19' center console with a 150 Oceanrunner new in 97. If your priority is fishing (especially striper) then it's excellent. Diving is another matter. Has such a tall transom that it's pure hell getting back in the boat after a dive. The couple times we've taken it diving we just inflated our BC's and used a short length of rope to "float" them alongside the boat while entering then had to climb up the motor to get in. Of course a boarding ladder would help LOTS. Giant strides off the front are super easy though.
