Can't sleep...door bell rings at 1 A.M.

I was dead asleep when my dog started going nuts then I herd my door bell ring! I rolled over in bed and it was 5 mins. to 01:00. My mother tells me there is someone at the door saying their truck is stuck. I looked out the window to see a bare footed women standing in my front yard.....i'm just like WTF!!! So i pick up the phone and dial the local sheriffs office. I give them all the info then the officers shows up about 10 mins later. By then the woman had another truck there and I guess the cop wouldn't let the other truck pull her out.

Almost an hour later the tow truck shows up(about 10 mins ago) and they are towing the truck I guess she didn't have insurance or was drunk I don't know. I decide not to walk outside because there could have been someone using her a decoy to lure me out! I figured in may not be a good idea to open the door with a 12ga. in hand. Normally my mother is home alone about this time but I got off work early tonight......she would have freaked out if she had been alone!

I will have to call a buddy of mine that works for the sheriffs office and get all the details. Even after the cop showed up I didn't want to walk out because I would have told to women something for waking me up at 1AM. Then to top it all of she left her headlights on the whole time shinning into my 70year old neighbors house. I hate stupid people! I would never knock on someone door at 1AM unless it was an extreme emergency not a truck stuck in the ditch!

Paranoid or practical? Sometimes the only way to tell the difference is what side of the police report you're on. You were on the correct side of that report. I really can't blame you. I don't even go near the door after 10pm unless the shotgun is nearby.

I will admit that were that me there, I would possible knock on your door, but I'd be very polite and understanding. That and calling 911 woudl be totally understood as well.

Glad it turned out good.

Navyhmc do you ever sleep?

I just called my buddy and he said the girl had a warrent out but didn't know what it was for. He told me about how crazy it has been tonight....people breaking into apartments through the roof which was a guy he went to high school with! You just never know with people these days....don't know if they really need help or not. Like I said I would walk somewhere before knocking on someones door at 1am that could go south with some old timer shooting through the door or something crazy like that.

Welcome to my world...you got to close the door. I would have to deal with the problem....I'm the Po-Po...

I feel your pain...that's for sure... Mine was at 3 am, he was drunk, and his pissed off gfriend gave him an anti-abuse pill instead of asprin........so he was very sick and needed a ambulance.... (alcohol & anti-abuse pills mixed together make you sicker than a dog).... Before the local sheriff( I live in different county than I work) and the ambulance showed up. The jacka** wants to go into my house because he is now hungry. The deputy shows up and just stands there with his thumb up somewhere and it's go time....This dumba** got grounded by me so hard he filed a complaint against the deputy that took him to jail.... Wasn't me that took him to jail....

Get some rest. I am off-duty now.

Since I live in Texas... I always answer the door wearing a weapon on my hip.... no ifs... ands.... or buts..... there is a weapon with me 24/7/365... unless i have to go in to the bank or federal building, in which case the weapon gets put in to my speed release safe under my seat.... then when I get back in to the car... back on my hip.

You open carry or you have a conceal carry permit? In louisiana open carry is legal but you just get unwanted attention! I just haven't gotten around to take the CCW class yet but I need too!

Funny you ask...I asked that of Compudude once . Actually, I work the night shift at EMS in Wichita, 1900-0700. If it's my slow post ,I have plenty of time to post afterthe chores are done.

I've been the guy who had to knock at 1:00 in the morning once. A bad accident which I was on the fringe of-car was wrecked but I was pretty much ok. I had to walk/hobble about a mile to the closest house to get 911 started. I knocked on the door loudly and then stepped back into the front yard and asked them to call 911. It was all good in the end-everyone made it. I went back to the farm house a week later with a thank you gift for calling. They were nice folks.

That is a good reason to knock on someones door!
I live in a small horse shoe shaped neighborhood and have never seen that women or truck around here before. hopefully stuff around the house won't come up missing!

I've got young children in the house, I don't open the door after 9 unless I know who it is. I don't care if the person's head is doing a 360 on their neck, I'll happily call the ambulance or the cops. If the world has taught me one thing, it's the benefit of redundant security. A bad guy would have to be extraordinarily talented and/or lucky to make it far enough into my house to deserve being shot. But, rest assured, should that happen, he/she will be shot (repeatedly) and then probably eaten by the dogs.

It's not perfect, but I've found that while Oklahomans are like Texans in many ways, they frown upon residential anti-personnel landmines. Oh well, now that Ok has a republican controlled legislature, maybe that too will change.

I have answer latenight knocks with my pistol in hand several times. Once was when a cop rang the doorbell at almost midnight. He never saw the gun (they never will unless it's go time), and I set it on a shelf beside the door when I saw who it was. That time he was being nice and letting me know our garage door was still open (and I was very thankfull). Other times I have had a homeless guy asking for food (at 2:00 am). I used to live in a VERY bad neighborhood a long time ago.

I have also had gun-in-hand answering the door during the day too. I consider it an appropriate level of paranoia. It doesn't affect my day-to-day life, but it keeps me and those around me safer.
