Well, I don't know if this is "bucket list" material, but I just found the location of a wooden cargo ship owned by Hudson Bay Trading that is in 30' of water about 2 hrs from my house. Probably not much left since it sank in 1830, but I wanna' go see what I can find.

Hey, thanks for the info. I've already filed with the consulate.

Anyway, That smokes bucket list!

Future conversation I will have:
"No, kid, really! I used to be on the same forum as that guy!"
'Sure, Granpa, sure you did. Ma! He's havin' one of those spells!'

Awwessome!

CD, you will love the Similians! Hubby and I were there just before the Tsunami. Best diving I have done by far, now if we could only get back there for a LOB

Actually, my profile photo is just after one of those Similian dives, hence the awestruck looks.
Well, I loved the day trip diving around Phuket, so I can't imagine not loving the Similans that much more.

(It was hilarious to hear the DM's and instructors on the trip complaining about how crappy the "local" diving was and how they wanted to be on a boat in the Similans instead!)

I didn't discover the wreck, I discovered the coordinates from a US Corps of Engineers dredging survey. I'm pretty sure someone already has a claim (I found a reference elsewhere to "waiting for archeology funding"). Also, Oregon has a strange law that anything in state waters older than 50 years old is the property of the state regardless of who discovers it, so I wouldn't be looking to salvage anything (unless I happen across an untraceable gold bar...). I have a feeling all I will find are some rotten wooden planks sticking out of the ground, but it's worth a peek.

Sounds Awesome! Have fun, let us know it you locate anything cool. But remember, no degree no touchee. If you aren't a trained volunteer working with an archeological group, don't mess with nuttin'. You could get in a lot of trouble if you do. Other than that, Enjoy!

Best vis is middle of winter (20-40 metres).
Weather is variable, but again, winter with a big high pressure system will give you cold, crisp mornings followed by clear blue skies with no wind.
The only operator is Bicheno Dive Centre Bicheno Dive Centre
A week of good diving will get you through the primary dives.
Coldest I've seen is 12C at Bicheno, although I've dived Eaglehawk at 11C.
Own boat means you need to know where to dive. There's not a lot of above water clues as to where the sites are and the good stuff is in the 25-40m range, so you can't navigate by 'feel'.

The most popular shore dive is Waubs Bay. Here's an article I wrote about it: www.divetheblue.net/pdf/artBackyard.pdf (300kb). This is probably the least exciting site there. The good stuff is in the marine reserve. The boat trip takes a really long time Some days it can take 7 or 8 minutes from the boat ramp to the dive site

I've had a wish list of places I've wanted to dive for quite a while. It seems to grow but I think I've done a good job of putting a dent in it.

Instead of the whole list here are the top 20 in no particular order

Red Sea(egypt & sudan)
Seychelles
Maldives
Phuket + Similians
Philippines(numerous areas)
Sipidan
Ningaloo Reef + Christmas Island
Southern Australia(Leafy Sea Dragon, great whites)
Indonesia(Ambon, Triton Bay, Flores,....)
Solomon Islands
Cook Islands & Tonga
Vanuatu
Channel Islands
Socorro Islands
Cocos Island
PNG(numerous areas)
French Polynesia(numerous)
Fernando de Noronha
East Timor
Fiji(numerous)

Lastly here are some places I want to go back to:
Indonesia(numerous - new & old)
Palau
PNG(Milne or Kimbe bay plus new)
Philippines(new & old)
Fiji(new & old)
Little Cayman
Bonaire
Great Barrier & Coral Sea
