Rather bizzarre it is. But it makes a sort of sense. Everyone is outside boarding up every last opening in the heat, need some refreshment. I guess it explains many of those injuries prior to the storm. Also as being one who has sat through 3 Hurricanes in the past several years, you really have nothing to do. Power is out, roads are closed for a week or more at a time. Ice is relatively easy to get as the aid stations start handing out free ice as soon as the storm blows over.
The wife and I volunteered several times with the local emergency aid agencies at the food and ice distribution centers here in Florida. These people would drive up asking for bags of ice. When you bring the bags of ice to their car you find the trunk loaded with cases of beer. They don't want and water or food, just ice. And seeing as they drive up in some pretty expensive vehicles you get the distinct feeling that they are just looking for ice to cool down thier drinks and are otherwise not hurting in any way. I felt like telling these characters to take a long walk off of a short pier as there were plenty of people coming that needed the ice way more then they did, but the policy at the emergency aid stations was not to turn anyone away, and to load them up with as much as they wanted.

That is just like when I was stationed in Minot ND. During the winter we would get blizzards. The stores on base would sell out of beer, soda, smokes and junk food. There was always tons of food to be bought. We didn't need ice up there, just stick the case of beer on the back porch for about 30 mins, and ice cold beer. We would actually have "Blizzard" parties, everyone would bring food, drink and games to someones house on the block and you would party till the roads were clear and back to work. I would mark on a calender every time there was a blizzard, and mark 40 weeks ahead, start a betting pool and see how many babies were born.
