Quotes that will make you think

I just read Sheck Exley's Caverns measureless to man, and it had to great qoutes in it. So i thought i would share them.

1--Survival depends on being able to supress anxiety and replace it with calm, clear, quick, and correct reasoning

2--This one is kinda long. " Every field of human endeavor from tiddly winks to space exploration has its champions and its marks for human endurance and achievement. Without them there would be little or no human progress to measure our efforts by or to encourage us to try harder. It is difficult to imagine any aspect of our lives that is not enhanced by competition, the drive to excell, and the recognition of excellence."

I think they are both kinda words to live by, and dive by to an extent. I must admit i never knew how intelligent, inventive, and brave this man was till i read the book.

"I ask, sir, what is the militia? It is the whole people, except for few public officials." (George Mason, 3 Elliot, Debates at 425-426)

"...the people are confirmed by the next article in their right to keep and bear their private arms" (from article in the Philadelphia Federal Gazette June 18, 1789 at 2, col.2,)

"The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren't enough criminals, one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws." - Ayn Rand

"Government isn't the solution to the problem, it IS the problem." Ronald Reagan

""The most foolish mistake we could possibly make would be to allow the subject races to possess arms. History shows that all conquerors who have allowed the subject races to carry arms have prepared their own downfall by so doing. Indeed, I would go so far as to say that the supply of arms to the underdogs is a sine qua non for the overthrow of any sovereignty." -Adolph Hitler

"'Among the many misdeeds of the British rule in India, history will look upon the Act depriving a whole nation of arms as the blackest." Mohatmus Ghandi

"To live content with small means, to seek elegance rather than luxury, and refinement rather than fashion; to be worthy, not respectable; and wealthy, not rich; to listen to stars and birds, babes and sages, with open heart; to study hard, think quietly, act frankly, talk gently, await occasions, hurry never; in a word, to let the spiritual (unbidden and unconscious) grow up through the common----this is my symphony"

William Henry Channing 1810-1884

Ive had this one near my desk or in my office ever since I started my philosophy degree (Rhodes College ´92)
