The burst disc is a thin disc of copper that will rupture or burst at a certain pressure. Each burst pressure requires a different thickness disc but they are very thin and the difference between them is measured in thousands of an inch. Most are not much thicker than a sheet of thick paper. A burst disc for a 3000 psi tank is .009" thick and should burst right before hydro test pressure. The reason such a thin piece of metal can hold 3000 psi is because the area of the hole it has to burst through is small, about 1/8" to 3/16"

Two more Qs.

1. Where is the burst disk located on a valve?

2. What would happen if the disk did burst, at say, 90 feet?

Usually opposite the knob.

On convertable valves, the assembies are on the back opposite the port

Look close, you will see little ratings

There is what looks like a hex head bolt on one side of the valve, If you look closely you will see 3 holes located on the side of three of the 6 flats sides where a wrench would fit. The burst disc is located under the bolt. There is a hole in the center of the bolt that connects to the three holes. when the burst disc bursts air flows from the tank through the center of the bolt and out the three holes.
If the bust disc is replaced regularly every one or two years there is little chance it will burst prematurely. In 40 years I have had only one burst while the tank was in storage and that was a very old one that hadn't been replaced in probably 10 years oor longer

If it bursts you best be wearing doubles or have a pony because you're running out of air real soon now.
