We dive double HP 100's and Double LP85's on the boats here in Boynton, Jupiter, and Pompano. I don't dive a boat unless I can bring my own tanks.
You can call it "just me being an arse" or I like the safety aspect of having my own tanks. If a boat says we can not bring or own tanks, then we don't dive that outfit.

is it common practice for the boats to not let you use your own tanks. As you can tell I haven't had the chance to do any tropical boat diving

There are lots of people who haven't bought tanks yet as it is the last thing you'll buy.

The reason why some boats have included tanks is because they believe it is easier for the guest divers to just come on the boat, strap on the BC and just go.

For tropical diving, well, you can't ship a tank considering the lugguage situation. Some shops in the resorts will have types of tanks for your needs and others just have AL80.

For doubling up a tank, my instructor and I sometime use the Dive rite Remora connector, but no manifold.

Most boats I've seen let you use your own tanks though some may have limitations on size/type usually related to their ability to secure them. In locations like FL or CA where there is a lot of charter competition you can simply go with the ones that accommodate you and avoid the ones who won't. In other places you may have little choice - put up with their terms or just not go diving offshore.

No Misses hit's it on the head...give the charter a call, they will tell you one way or another. Be sure to ask if you need to bring bungee's or what if you have an 8" dia tank.

From my experiences: Most So Cal charters will assume you have your own tanks unless you specify. Caribbean: They will assume you don't have tanks unless you specify. Red Sea (late 80's) will plan on you using their DIN tanks unless you demand yoke Micronesia is the same as Carib.

Alaska looks at you as if you're nuts to begin with...them waters are for fishing, not diving!

Why guess, ask and find out.
