Don't forget, you need to send them out for hydro testing every 5 years, too.

But, having your own tanks means you never have to call the shop ahead of time to reserve them, pick them up, return them before the rental period turns over, etc. It makes it much more convenient for you to actually go diving. I'll admit I never really understood the benefit until I bought my own tanks.

From your wife's perspective (if she's not a diver), it'll probably mean more ugly, heavy gear cluttering up the house. I don't think you'll come up with a successful economic theory to satisfy her Just say it'll save you time and make it easier for you to dive.

To save money on hydros. Go directly to where the LDS gets them done. Usually a fire extingushier service/fire protection company.

DOT has a list of facilities on their website:

PHMSA - Cylinders

Look under: Authorized Manufacturers and Retesters

Thanks for the link, I had not thought of that option.

When considering purchasing your own taks, don't forget the most important thing. Your gear room just doesn't look "complete" without a few tanks sitting around.

I own one. This way I am always ready for a last minute beach dive.
If I am doing a boat dive, I usually have more notice and can rent the second or third tank.

We have 4 now .... 2-80's and 2-63's. Really paid off when we were doing 2 tanks each on every Saturday and/or Sunday this past fall. And the LDS was doing $1 fills as well, so we saved a bundle. I like having tanks ready to roll if we decide to head out at 8:00 AM for the lake. Otherwise we'd be waiting for the LDS to open to rent a tank.

Just take the leap and buy your own tanks. I did and never had any regrets.

i was faced with this same dilemma and decided to rent until the money is not an issue. It would take me a long time to recoup the money
