All depends on what tank it is... for exmaple, there were some OMS steel tanks a while back that had a rust problem and there was a recall on them. (the recall has expired now and any of the affected tanks are now worthless). Are they in hydro? are they in vis? Have they had some gas (air, nitrox, etc) in them? if not, then likely there is moisture on the inside and most likely rust. Post the manufacturer and model number here and we'll have more to go on and give you opinions. Note, any tank made in 1992 might be a "true" HP tank and not a 3442psi. so DIN only valve at 3500psi rating. They also might be heavy as boat anchors, depending on which tank it is. If they don't fall into any of the "problem categories" then $100 bucks each for them is a pretty decent deal. |

A Sherwood cylinder of that era is probably going to be a good cylinder. I'd buy them if they look good, it does help if you know what to look for. Since it's steel rust is the biggie, but I think those are PST galvanized and probably painted over that. Many of the newer Sherwoods like that are nice to have, and yes from then it is a 3500 PSI cylinder. I have some and I'd like a couple more to be honest.
Just be wary of rust around the boot, some do rust there if the coating is damaged. Outside of that a vis is needed to be sure. I've seen really horrible interiors of steel cylinders, but then I do vis inspections for a shop and get to see a lot of abuse. For you just look for dings, gouges, dents, deep scratches, basically abuse to the exterior. See if it's got air in it or not. If not be wary as rust may have formed and I would look inside at that point. Don't air it though if it's got air in it unless you can replace the air.

As a comparable sale, I picked up a pair of those for tanks for $50 each- they were out of hydro but looked good except for paint- obviously well used *and* well cared for. I snatched them on the spot and I love everything about them except the 7/8 neck (can't double with a standard manifold).

yeah what Joe said I have a buddy who has let me hold onto his old Genesis 1989 Tanks made by PST great tanks, but they do have the 7/8ths in thread which is a PIA to find valves for. Also these tanks have no Rust what so ever on the outside havent taken a look inside yet...
Reason he was trying to find a valve was because he wanted to sidemount them at some point so was trying to find an opposing valve(valve with knobb on the left instead of the right)

my tanks were made in 78 and some were made in the 80's all steels. make sure the tanks are in hydro if not have stipulaton that they will or pass or money will be refunded. if you buy and they don't you will be paying $100 for scrap steel, that will not pay off

Still need more info. Sherwood had some old tanks that were "spun steel" made by "Ahasi" or some name similar to that. those tanks don't seem to be as well though of as newer tanks. they are heavy as crap also. I think that sherwood also had some tanks made by PST and maybe some by Faber. can you provide the "stamped info" that is on the tank? |
