You could make a rack that fits perfectly in your trunk for everything. Partitions for anything you want. Don't glue the whole thing together so you can get it out of your trunk. You could put a shallow tray under it and make a drip rack for your stuff too. Just spitting ideas out.

I put them under a cargo net and drop the soft weights between them to keep them from clanging together...

I made something out of a pool noodle. Each piece of Noodle is 21.5" long and about 6" between the noodles. I used shock cord for mine that way I did not have to worry about spreading it apart when I was putting the tanks on it in the trunk. I did make a few of these for friends some with rope and some with chock cord, and I like the shock cord better. This keeps both the 7.25" and 8" tanks secure. I have taken corners fast in my car and forgoten about the tanks in the back. I have never had one roll out of there even when they are in the trunk by them selves.
