Steel 72 hydros

Just realized that steel 72's are not 72's unless it's + rated.

The tank was + rated at some point in life, but not in the last hydro. Do I have to ask specifically ask LDS to do a + test ? Or it was not done because of the age/

You can ask them to do a "+" testing on it. The only time a plus is good is on the most current hydro. All else fails, ask them.

I believe that all tanks that come new with a + rating have the specified capacity only with that + rating. So an LP85 (which is really and 82 & change) actually has less capacity than an Al80 if it does not have the + rating.

Also, you ask the hydro facility to do the + rating. The LDS just ships it off in most cases although I know of at least one that is also a hydro facility. So, find out who does hydro's in your area and contact them directly, it'll probably be a lot cheaper. I've seen people raped over hydro's.

A continuing problem with getting 72's + rated is most shops today no longer have the necessary manufactures documentation for the REE or they are to lazy or don't have the knowledge to calulate it.
Sometimes the best you can do is get the test results of the hydro and figure it out yourself if your cylinder would qualify for the +. That's what I do but I fill my own and pretty much don't worry about if they qualify or not and just pump them to 2500.

For a PST 72 the REE is 58.4 cc's and should be the same or very close to it for other manufactures.
