I need your experienced opinions

OK all,

I need your expert opinions, as I am a fairly new to diving.

Is this a good deal? I have located 2 HP100 tanks with din valves, (yes my set up is din) Mfg date early 90s, both with about 2 years left on hydro and current vis. for $175 each.

They are different brands but match so I am guessing the actual manufacturer was the same. They appear to be galvanized from the picture the guy sent me.

are they o2 cleaned? you could ask the guy to have them VIP'd, since with steels there is a big issue of rust.

normally, the issue of rusing will come from nitrox tanks, because in order to fill a tank some dive shops will drain it completely and then start over, instead of mixing on top of current mix. therefor, they can cause codenstation from draining to fast, causing some rust spots.

also, if they dove them to empty or close to, they could have moisture in them as well (or from fillin too fast).

so, i suggest atelast have the person have them VIP'd (and make sure they arent able to do it themselves, cuz they could forge a sticker easily)

you could also have them hyrdo'd, and if they pass, then you say youll buy them.

chances are they will be fine. pretty good deal, from what i can remember steels are around $300 a piece new for HP100s

good luck!

seems to be a bit expensive for tanks over 10 years old. do you know what brand? I would check the brand first you as not all steel tank are created equal. Also you want to make sure the valve is in top shape.

I would agree a bit high. Also if a Genesis HP then they are 7/8" valves which is okay but many people did not like the valves that came with them as they stuck up at an angle.

You can find HP100 new for $250 when places are having a sale. After my inspection and a new vis inspection I would probably say $300 would be more in line.

I got to second the opinions. There a bit high. I bought a full set of doubles used for just a bit more (375). Figure $250ish to $300.

Now, for the tanks, so longs as they are in good shape, steels last a long time.

i got a brand new HP 100 steel for ~230 from diversdirect. the deal comes up at least twice per year and you have to get a special link to the sale page. so, is 175 good for >10 year old tanks? i'd rather buy new ones for slightly higher price. but again if you need them now and can't wait for the deal, then i'd get the tanks VIPed prior to purchase.

Based on the advice of another tall (I am 6'5") tech diving friend and the added expense of an unexpected chance to go to Guam, I opted not to purchase the tanks. If anyone is interested in them, pm me and I will get you in touch with the seller. He might be willing to negotiate on price. Also, I was wrong on the hydro, there is 3 years left not one.
