I've done that too. I've also done the one with forgetting the weight belt and not understanding why I'm not sinking. I like to think these are newbie mistakes and since they've happened to me, I'm more conscious about it when I prep for dives.

During my search and recovery coarse, one of the instructors assistants thought he had hidden an item too easily, and so he told us he was going to re-hide a weight at about 80 feet. We looked and looked and looked some more and nobody could find it. We started running low on air and abandoned the search. Since the weight belonged to one of the instructors, the instructor started looking for it himself, to no avail. When we all got out of the water and back to the tent, the instructor's assistant was holding the weight. Apparently he never got a chance to hide it.

At a rig in the gulf spearfishing - a diver from another boat tried to submerge head first from the surface. He was in full scuba gear, his fins were out of the water and he was kicking like mad. He also had a speargun in his hand. We left - no way was I gona dive on the same rig as this guy.

I had a 'duh' moment in a pool session last week. We were practicing counting kick cycles for navigation, and we were supposed to do two laps with mask to get the counts right, then a lap without mask (and with a buddy to guide us) to figure out which direction we naturally veer.
My buddy was doing his return lap and I'd take my reg out to talk to him when we reached the wall. He goes under and starts kicking, I for some reason took a big breath to hold and followed ... and after a while, started realizing what I was doing and put my reg back in my mouth. ![]() Last edited by violakat03 : 05-19-2008 at 09:02 AM. |
