that's kinda sad....I also think anyone who gets certified, gets gear, then dives only in lakes is doing themselves an injustice. A friend who I was selling on diving had another friend tell them (ehh, it's kinda boring after the first 20 times you go do it)...I thought really, where the hell do you dive? Lake Travis...ok, for me, the lake is where you go when MUST get wet, and you can't do the diving you want to do! I wonder if he had a chance to go hit some warm hi-viz reefs if he would have re-ignited his interest...I can't imagine getting bored with diving (maybe because I only get to do my favorite kind of diving a couple of weeks a year) However - that's not why I wandered back over to this thread...I was reading another thread and thought of something stupid I did a year or so ago... ok, so I'll share something stupid I did once, related... In Cozumel, on the dive boat, about 2 minutes from making our entry...On the dive boat, I always assemble my own equipment, I'm always the last person to touch my valve, no matter what anyone tells me is already turned on...nothing personal to the DM or captains... Strap up, strapon, getting ready to back roll in, grabbing mask, getting situated...dive master sits next to me (bc already on) and says "hey can you turn on my air" So, I'm kinda busy putting fins on, getting console sitatuated, so I throw one hand back without looking reach over and start loosening the 'valve' for his air, after 2 turns something is 'loose' (wtf?) I look over I'm opening the yoke valve on his first stage, the loose is the first stage now ready to come off the tank. He see's a funny look in my eye and says "what's wrong" "nothing, I'm an idiot"...tighten, turn on air...life is good. 2 things 1) always take the time to look at what you are doing, no matter how wrote things become, or how many things you are doing 2) never be afraid to admit when you are an idiot Ray

Way back in the early 1980's while on a search and rescue practice dive we were in a rock quarry and had to locate and beach two 200 # dummies from a sunken aircraft. My BFD (buddy for the day) was busy looking at the huge bass in the water and forgot where he was going....my hand was on the door opening of the aircraft when he and his 250# mass smashed into my hand. As a result I dislocated my thumb but the water was so cold I did not know it until after we had retrieved the dummies and beached them. Once my hand warmed up (no gloves) I noticed my thumb sort of dangling and then the pain hit.
![]() To make matters worse...we had to do one more dive for the day and it was a CSA from 90 feet. I put the thumb back in joint the old fashioned way....pop! We started the last dive and but unknown to me was that I had come down with a sinus infection. It decided to let me know about it at about 20 feet on the ascent. No Safety Stops back then and I was moving at 60ft/minute to the surface...the sinus locked up and I could not stop the ascent before it blew. OUCH! Ripped out the lining of the one over my left eye and nearly passed out. Mask filled with blood and I barely made it to shore. Could not dive for 3 years after that due to the sinus injury. |

I was recently the recipient of a complete Sherwood reg set with full analog console, and a SeaQuest BCD because a friend of mine did the same thing. He and his wife certified years ago, went for a couple of dives, and then shelved it all. When he heard about my son certifying back in August, he came over and just gave it all to me.
