Dye markers are good for aerial searches, however, they don't last more then a few hours...depending on the currents. I think a rescue streamer is a good device to have. They can be found at rescuestreamer.com. They've been approved for military use. I know there's a review out there on the net somewhere where they reviewed the effectiveness of mirrors, whistles, dive alerts, smb, etc. This was tested as well and did well.

I've got a safety sausage but don't always carry it. I guess I will from now on.

A fews hours I think is overly optimistic unless the dye pack was very large and the ocean motionless, I tried one of the OMS packs out for kicks and it lasted about 25mins and it was a pretty still day. Agree the "rescue streamer" would be a good addition given that it will not disipate like the dye and would be highly visible from the air, according to the manufacturer anyway.
