Generally speaking, you get a breeze blowing toward land (a sea breeze) during the day, and toward the water (a land breeze) at night. Of course, with Florida having water on both sides, and water that's warmer than I'm accustomed to, that might not be a great cue down there. Pay attention though... you might find it works in your locale.

Otherwise, if you're relatively near shore, head toward the light pollution at night.

I'll always remember the advice of one of my dive instructors. If you want to avoid getting left behind, make sure that you make yourself as obnoxious as you have to be so that the captain, crew, and other passangers can't forget about you.

But, will they miss you if you're not there. My plan is to be friendly and helpful and try to be the guy everyone enjoys being around so they will miss me even more and spend moretime trying to find me.

We asked our instructor about this during OW. He mentioned it happens in Coz about once a month.

Some boats have a tag system. Before you enter, you clip a numbered tag to your BC. When you board the boat at exit, you replace the tag on the board. DAN has a system like this.

Has happened to me once, but the other dive boat was less than 100 metres away any more than that or say 5 minutes and I wonder if they could find everyone as they spread on the currents? Also at night I've found sticking a torch up inside an SMB really makes it light up.

I find obnoxious (which comes naturally ) far better but be careful they may pay to leave you behind.

Basically I use it for signalling, the bigger the target the better. It reflcts light 360 degrees if I place it over my head (and keeps the sun off of me). It takes up no space. In my nighthawk BCD on the shoulders there is a little space between the webbing and the shoulder pad that forms a small pocket. I have the space blanket in there and can't tell that it's there. And a mirror in the one on the other side.
