I wouldn't be surprised if he saw the shark from this board and jumped on it trying to grab it or scare it. If so, he deserved a bite.

That is not an "attack". It was a "bite". Surfers do get tagged up there on occasion and they know the risks. Surfing in murky churned up water outside an inlet that serves as a breeding ground and source of food. Especially between the sand bar and the shore.
Slow news day I guess.

And Mike, the kid is 15, made national news and is proud of his red badge. He can have his 15 minute . Goofy as it was.
A buddy of mine was tagged off Sebastian inlet a few years ago when he was a HS freshman. He was the talk of the town down here in Jupiter. His dad even posted pics of his injury on the kid's web site with some very cool animated shark graphics.

Good ol' Fox News probably asked him to wear the shades to enhance his "hard core" surfer aura (couldn't you feel it?)
I like the way they put the graphic of the 5m Great White lunging from the water in the story opening. That must have been what hit him, hm?

Ya know, you might be correct.
Did not consider that. This is Fox after all.

yeah... I bet he thought it would be fun to jump on a shark and grab it and try to scare the hell out of it....

of course the shark bit in self defense....

but even though the kid thought he was "hot sh**" jumping on the shark, he's not dumb-ass enough to get on TV and admit that he was the one at fault and did it intentionally...

Mike:
Please don't indite this kid. You, I, most scubadivers and all surfers know this shark did not "attack" the kid.

I can assure you, this kid did not intentionaly provoke the shark. Surfers know the risk and the young ones enjoy the notoriaty when bitten, but no one wants to deal with the pain and rehab.

New Smyrna has terrible viz. Especially in the shore break. There is no way he saw the shark if it was under him. And even if he did see it, he would not provoke it.

My experience is when sharks become territorial, most of the teen aged surfers wisely exit. A lot of the old farts will ride it out.

But fact is, none of these watermen will provoke the animals.

At least he wasn't totally mangled. I like the 'tough guy' attitude his friends had "we're going surfing in a couple of hours...can't wait to get back out there".
