9 die in turnpike accident

I spent 45 minutes at a dead stop on the highway... The accident occured in the eastbound lanes and I was heading west. I was in shock seeing the after math of this accident. As you can see in the video the car under the truck was not the only vehicle under it.

Man oh man, that is horrible.... what a shame. Those cars were just obliverated... My thoughts go out to all involved. The news cast said the truck didn't even slow down when it hit stopped traffic... and the speed limit on I44 in Okla. is 75 isn't it?.... sheesh. Thats to bad.

This is a photo I took as i was passing by... there were 2-3 cars under the semi.... maybe the one in the grass that is in the video... thats crazy how that person they pulled from under the semi was still alive, well from the looks of it still alive

yes the speed limit is 75... I have seen numerous wrecks at the border due to hydro plaining on the graded section 1 being be hitting the gaurd rail at 75mph but none to this extent.

traffic accidents are so senseless, unfortunately like most drivers on the road(senseless)-I drive the 95 corridor in the midatlantic region for a living and see at least one major accident a day-i also can see down into peoples cars as we pass each other and am constantly amazed by what people do when they are behind the wheel, instead of paying attention to driving(putting on makeup, reading newspaper, watching dvd,texting-eating and talking on phone don't even make this list), or for doing dumb s**t(like driving extended periods on the "donut"spare, its not a real tire!tying mattress to roof with one rope around middle thru the window. etc)-most accidents involving big trucks are caused by a car doing something stupid(suddenly slowing down in front of them, cutting into their lane and taking away the safety zone for braking, etc)-i feel terrible for the people involved in the crash in the OP, because they were innocent victums of one person's stupidity

I heard about this, prayers to the victims and families.

You are correct neo, the driver of that vehicle under the semi didn't survive. They posted last last night that when then got the semi off the car, they found another vitim.

While I totally agree with your assesment of accidents and the semi influence, scubagirlj, the reports have the semi not slowing down and attempting to stop too late. There had been an accident at the location earlier and traffice was still slowed when this accident occurred.

I will go on a limb and suggest that in this case, we will find outthat the driver was tired and had missed a mandatory rest stop. This has been the cause of a good number of car vs. semi wrecks that I have run over the years: A Tired (and drunk!) semi driver killed 3 of a family of 5, a tired Semi driver ignored a construction warning, struck and killed a highway worker, A semi that was involved in a 4 car collision at a suburban stop light was found to have missed not one, but two rest stops.

I have also seen the results of a car not respecting the size, speed and poor stopping abilities of a semi and the end result is squashed car.

No matter how you cut it, a bad scene.

i'm not saying that trucks are never to blame and it is tragic that this driver chose to obviously break every rule for commercial drivers, but we as a group are for the most part especially careful since any ticket we receive we get double points and double fined and too many points and you lose your license-not to mention that if your log book is not up to date you can be shut down if stopped or as in my case, our company reviews our log books weekly and compares them to our EZ pass records and fuel receipts to make sure the times jive

Very bad indeed....

Obviously, way too soon to make any judgements, but the interstates are dangerous. As mentioned, people doing stupid things and it just takes a split minute to get in trouble. Cars don't respect the larger vehicles. I drive a 40' motorhome at times and it takes time and distance to stop these things. Cars don't understand and squeeze into "safe zones". Big trucks tend to just go and also cut off cars. Don't know why a large truck thinks they have to pull out into the passing lane in front of a line of cars and block both lanes with another truck.

People are in a hurry and just don't take time to slow down and pay attention. My thoughts go out to those in the accident and the families. Summer is sure heating up with many tragedies.

I will be driving this stretch of highway this week in the motorhome....seeing this sure gave me a shiver.
