People don't pay attention when they are out on the water. They think that they are the only things out there.

I hope that when they catch this guy, they toss him in jail for attempted vehicular manslaughter... he could have killed both of them, and then left the scene of the crime. Somebody hits me with a boat and does not kill me, and RUNS... I will go to the ends of the earth looking for them with a "care package" for their boat.

You don't register the name of the boat. You register manufacturer, length, etc.
Thanks, I didn't know that. I'm so used to thinking about boats by name that I assumed the name on the stern is more official than it actually is...

Quick run down for you
hull# = VIN - used to regester boat
State # on sides by bow = license plate
name on transom= bumper sticker(in most cases)

You can regester a boat by name but you are subject to higher standards for inspection. It usually commercial boats that do this, or some one featured on the life style of the rich and famous.

Pretty good description. The name on the stern of a vessel may just be a "bumper sticker" or it could be like a license plate if it is a documented vessel. It would be a name with the port listed underneath. A documented vessel can be traced fairly easily. A lot of folks document their vessel rather than register it with the state to dodge personal property taxes.

About 7 years ago I investigated a fatal hit-and-run boating crash. The suspect boat ran completely over top of an anchored vessel and nearly decapitated the victim who was knocked overboard. The suspect boat took off and they hid the vessel and hired an attorney and kept quiet about it.

A dive team found the victim a couple of days later. He had blunt trauma to the chest and his head and arm had almost been severed.

I found the vessel stashed in a shed a shortly after the body was found. Painted on the transom was the word "DILLIGAF". That name on the transom did not leave a good impression with the court.
In case you did not know DILLIGAF stands for;
Does It Looks Like I Give A F***

The operator is still in prison at this time.
