OK, I'll fess up (since it happened when I was a youngin' in college, many, many, many moons ago). I'd been on several dives with the same outfit in SE FL. I went out on one wreck dive to a site I'd visited a day or so before, and lo and behold, I was the most experienced/current diver aboard (at age 20 or so, and with only 20-30 dives!). There was no dive master and the operator (who might have been a dive master, but wasn't diving) asked if I'd take the line down and tie off to the wreck. Alone. Sure, I said, feeling all full of myself. Besides, I remember seeing some hatch dogs the last time that I wanted to get :-) Well, to make a long story short, I jumped in, didn't completely vent my BC, kicked like he#$ to get down AND against a current, and tied off. There I was, at 60 or so feet, hyperventilating, all alone. I remember watching my pressure gauge dip with every gasp I took. I was dizzy. I didn't panic, but I was definitely concerned! I thought I might pass out. Well, I eventually calmed down and finished off the dive.

I just shake my head thinking about it now.

In hindsight, I never should have taken on that responsibility. I shouldn't have gone alone. I should have taken my time to prepare and make a proper descent (with a buddy!), and I should have aborted the dive and started an ascent when I realized I was hyperventilating and dizzy.

My young ego, desire to collect some trinkets, and inexperience nearly did me in. I'd say all but one hole in the Swiss cheese was lined up that day! God had other plans for me.

I hope someone will learn from this.

My wife and I jumped off a dive boat in Cozumel approx 3 years ago. Seemed to me that I was having to kick more than usual to get down. Thinking that it was air trapped in my wing, I went ahead and powered through to the bottom. The dive went off without a hitch, until we came up to do our safety stop. I kept having to kick downward in order to maintain any depth whatsover. We comlpeted our stop and proceeded to exit the water. The first thing out of my mouth is "Honey were you drifting up and holding onto me, because I couldn't maintain depth without kicking". So here I've already accused my wife of creating the problem and all along it was do to the fact that my weight belt was still sitting on the boat!! Trust me, I'll never live that one down.
