Bad First Dive
On my first dive, a storm blew in suddenly while we were under the surface. When we got out and started taking our gear off, it seemed to clear up. I just took off my dive boots when a bolt of lighting struck the ground 150 feet away. I was shocked through the legs and was frozen for a few moments. I was fine though but it was scary nonetheless. I was lucky, what about you? Any odd/ frightening experiences happen to you?

on my first dive whenever we surfaced after our first 1 a storm blew in and almost EVERYBODE on the boat was sick. 6/8 were sick, but we decided we had to get my cert. dives done so we went down 1 more time and on my second time ascending I had a horrible reverse squeeze and some blood came out of my nose and stuff.
nevertheless it was still fun and I can't wait to do it again ![]()

My first dive at Ginnie Springs wasn't to great. My son took my BCD by mistake so when I put all my gear on my weight and everything was off. So I was floating incorrectly, someone kicked the side of my head and my snorkel went missing. My buoyancy was so bad the instructor asked me to get out of the spring to check my gear. After that I gave up on the first dive to get my composer back and finally was ready to try again and did great the second and third dive....Ugh what a day. and yes I marked my gear after that.

Nope, never had anything THAT bad happen. I have been tangled in line, had vertigo, and had an LP O-ring split at about 80 feet, leaving me without an LP inflator but those were rather minor issues.
Lightning is a huge no-no in my book.

Boat struck by lightening
During my AOW training we went out on what looked like a clear day but radio chatter indicated a storm could change direction and head our way.
Last dive of the day was an 75' wreck dive. I was standing on the deck of the wreck when I felt the thermocline rise and it got dark. It felt like I was being dipped in freezing cold water. My buddy and I started to head for higher ground (the wheel house) when a Rescue Diver appeared and signaled us to end the dive, no safety stop. Broke the surface and was greeted with panic and chaos. The boat master was yelling at everyone to grab the drift line. Once we all had a hold of it, he and the Course Director started hauling us in with the line. They were grabbing the divers and sliding them on the deck line fishing men landing a large tuna. As they grabbed my buddy there was a lightening strike close enough I felt a tingle. I got in the boat and half way to the front without any help. Once the Rescue Diver was on we started the boat and head for the nearest island (opposite direction of our port). Boat master just wanted to avoid being the highest object in the area. As we were heading for the island the front of the boat was hit by lightening. Didn't feel anything that time. Made it to the island and waited a few minutes for the storm to pass then heading back to port. |
