What it was like before:  http://www.asiadivesite.com/indonesi.../sangalaki.php What it is like now:    Dive Borneo Indonesia with Sangalaki Dive Lodge in Kakaban, Derawan, Nabucco, Maratua, Samama and see mantas, turtles, sharks... SANGALAKI DIVE LODGE IS CLOSED! AFTER 18 MONTHS OF REBUILDING & RENOVATIONS, THE GOVERNMENT CLOSED THE RESORT IN MARCH 2009. THE REASON? POLITICAL INDECISION! THE ISLAND IS NOW A DISGRACE! ANYTHING OF ANY VALUE HAS BEEN STOLEN OR DESTROYED! TURTLES CANNOT EASILY ACCESS THE ISLAND TO LAY THEIR EGGS DUE TO THE DEBRIS ON THE BEACH! THE CORAL REEFS ARE BEING DESTROYED BY DYNAMITE FISHERMEN AND A CROWN OF THORNS EPIDEMIC! THE GOVERNMENT IS AWARE OF THIS BUT IS DOING NOTHING! SANGALAKI COULD HAVE BEEN THE FLAGSHIP FOR DIVING IN BORNEO. INSTEAD IT IS A REMINDER THAT INEPTITUDE & IGNORANCE REMAIN THE NUMBER 1 CAUSE OF WORLDWIDE REEF DESTRUCTION I hope the extent of damage is not too big...... |
