No misses definitely has a point. But I am tired of the whole misconception that sharks are killers. That is total B.S. Elephants kill more people than sharks in a year. Falling coconuts injure and kill more people than sharks. (its true). I am disgusted that Discovery has a shark week that portrays sharks as "Brutal killers". I would love to punch the guy who decided to make Jaws a movie, and gave sharks such a bad name.

Yes, elephants and coconuts kill more people a year than sharks... so does Mt. Everest.

I bet it a coconut had a big set of teeth like a shark and ate meat, we would all be scared of it!!

I would agree with you on the numbers, but sharks "eat" people, coconuts... not so much. I mean if coconuts did eat someone, then they would have programs about "Hunting the rouge coconut palm".

Note: We do, on a certain level, actually get even with the coconut...we cage them, eat their young....and kill them whenever we feel like it.

We (humans) take great pride in killing things that offer even the slightest threat to us. Ego thing.

It is a shame, that humans, if they were allowed, would kill everything that represented even the slightest threat to us. Sadly, sharks are, for the most part, one of the least protected of that small group.

Bears are protected, for the most part. Most species of large croc or alligator are (mostly). What is left of the big cats are (again - mostly), but sharks are still fair game (fair in this case is not the correct word).

There are animals that do kill a lot of people... Nile croc's and cobra's, for example. Oddly, they have far more protection than almost any shark has.

To name an episode of a favorite show of mine, Space 1999. Another Time Another Place.

What you don't understand is that back when that movie was made that was how Sharks were viewed by almost everybody. It was much later that the author decided that he made a mistake and said if he knew then what he knew now he wouldn't have done the book.

Yes Jaws really messed with my wife who now has an irrational fear of swimming in the ocean. I have been working on it for years and she is just now considering getting certified.

Hey, just help her understand that she is far more likely to get hit by a stingray, or some nasty jellyfish...or lighting, all of which happen more than shark attacks...that should calm her down.

P.S. Don't forget cone shells....

Sharks don't have protection because not many people see them, other than on Discovery channel shows. "Out of sight, out of mind" is the correct term I believe. I also think it may be because they live in the ocean, and no one ever goes into the ocean for more than 1-2 minutes (except us of course), so, says the DNR, if nobody ever has to encounter them other than tourists (nobody likes the tourists) and beach bums, then there must not be a problem... Also goes with the whole out of site, out of mind thing.
