Angry Hunt for Monster Sharks-Spike TV

Spike TV runs coverage of the unbelievable slaughter of sharks as a macho sport of some kind!

How can this still be legal in this age?

It's bad enough sharks are slaughtered by the millions by the fishing industry but as a misguided redneck compitition is shameful!!!

Does anyone know of any organizations who are try to stop this?

Spike TV: Hunt for monster sharks
Sharks
The Hunt For: Monster Sharks The ocean's most lethal hunter becomes the hunted in this one-hour special following the 2007 Oak Bluffs Monster Shark Tournament, the supreme showdown for shark in the world. High drama and suspense are the norm as the fight ensues between man and shark.

There are a lot of organizations around the world trying to stop shark hunts, but since it's fishing it's hard to set laws without labeling them as threatened or endangered. I would try SeaWatch, Ocean Legacy, Oceana, SeaWeb and Oceans Alive

i just found this online while looking for details...

oh, is it actually on now?

"I'll admit I've only heard about this recently, despite it being around for the past twenty years, but it seems unfair to the sharks to send so many humans into their territory to kill them. The only way I could get behind this is if they balanced it out by letting 1,000 sharks come onto the land to see which one can capture the fattest person. They'd have to build mobile aquarium suits and robot legs for the sharks, which you have to admit would be really cool."

that's another person with my point of view.

I saw the commercial for this show. My first thought was how stupid and then my second thought was how stupid, ect.

I did not watch the shark show as I was watching Clemson and those other guys play last night.

I think the whole idea is ill conceived and stupid. It only panders to the "MACHO" and ignorant. I think if enough people would speak out against this type of programming and activity it would at least help reduce the commercial value in showing the program. There are 1200 + members to this forum and if you can believe SB there are 81,000+. If everyone would let "Spike" know how they felt I bet they wouldn't continue to show that kind of crap! I propose all of us ST Forum members send a note to let them know. The only email addy I can find from the web site is feedback@ifilm.com. Someone else would have to carry the cause to SB as I'm not too well liked there. My message is already on its way.

I didn't watch the show. I do not know any of the stats. ie; how many boats, what kind of sharks, etc. That being said, I have participated in fishing tournaments. These were "meat fish" tourneys, where you catch food quality species and besides having something for the dinner plate, you may get a chance to win some money. Most tourneys are not wholesale slaughter. With the "big fish" tourneys, there is often a penalty for bringing in a fish that is obviously too small to win. An example of this would be "bringing in a 500 lb blue marlin after somebody has already weighed a grander. I digress...Back to the shark tourn'ey...As long as they abided by the laws (bag and size limits), and the fish were consumed and not wasted, I don't have a problem with it. This may offend the PETA crowd.

P.S. I am not a vegitarian. Before you attack the way that animals are harvested, look at your own diet. Are you consuming animals that somebody else killed? Just because you did not personally shed it's blood, does that make you any less responsible for it's death?

Hold your flames for 5 minutes while I go and put on my Nomex suit and grab the fire extinguisher

No Misses does bring up some good points I didn't think of. I guess since I didn't watch the show I shouldn't cast judgement either, but the commerical did make it look like it was simply manly to slaughter these sharks. There was probably more too it, as No Misses pointed out, so my reaction from only seeing the commercial was probably premature...
