I didn't notice that but I did notice that a news network devoted to diving did say that certified and uncertified divers should have a physical exam within 6 months of diving. My problem even as a non diver with that is they are promoting diving without the proper certifications, if there is one thing that I have learned from finflippers it is that you don't dive without proper training and certifications because it isn't safe.

Yeah I noticed that too SW, but you need to think about it like the whole "Safe Sex talk in school" issue. (god I hope I'm not opening up a can of worms here).

Are you promoting sex in school by educating? Yes you are maybe giving someone who had not thought of it otherwise thoughts involving sex.
But, atleast I think, getting the information out there will also put the thought into someones head.

So you have two problems with the scuba divers.
1) They are going to dive untrained regardless of your thoughts on the subject.
2) They are going to be sneaky and lie about it if they have to.

By not lording certification over them, you make sure that they at least get a physical, even if they honestly don't belong in the water.

I personally don't believe that sex belongs in the schools what so ever, so that statement doesn't hold water for me. I do know that people are going to dive untrained and uncertified regardless, my thought was geared more toward the reporting agency advocating such a practice.

Note: I want to make sure that everyone knows that my issue is not with the divers by with the news network.

They're the National Enquirer of diving news, some people read them but won't admit to it in public.

I personally don't.

No, there are many times when a non-certified person will be diving
  • While enrolled in a driving class aim at obtaining certification
  • While in a "discover scuba" program which is just like the class but not aimed at obtaining certification.
A lot of people do the discover scuba thing at resort locations.
