Not a tough one to figure out if you are familiar with Florida East coast diving. Diving Floridas east coast involves current. The further north you go the closer to shore the current generally runs. West palm and north 2 knot northerly currents are common within 1/2 mile from shore. On some days that can be 4 to 6 knots. So my take is that these people jumped in not leaving anyone on board. And got swept out of range of the boat. It, is damn near impossible to make any headway swimming against even a 2 knot current. I figure these people had little or no experience diving the east coast of FLA.

You are right about that it could have been a whole lot worst than just being a little embarassed by having to be picked up, than not and becoming a statistic. Swimming against the current is a bitch that is why i go with it.
