bear with me on this one....
soo recently ive been reading a few scuba diving books...one of which is called the last dive.... and i had this idea that (because im new to scuba) might sound really stupid...but here goes nothing....
after reading the book that was prodominantly about technical divers i realized that all teh scenarios (in the book) could have been prevented if they could have finished thier decompression....but since they were out of air they had to surface....and communication seems to be key when it comes to solving situations.... my idea is simple if you could communicate with the boat and let them know that you need someone to bring down air...so why not have a small float that can be filled off a small CO2 cartrige in you pocket that you could pull out, fill up and let shoot up to the top... than someone would know that you need more air to finish your decompression and could bring it to you.... i know the idea needs some refinement...but does anyone else think that its a good idea? |

Many DSMB's have an attachement point for a slate or wetnotes.
Good idea and very observant. http://www.omsdive.com/lift-smb.html In the UK, DSMB's with their own little scuba tanks are the norm I believe. Here in the US I am starting to to see ones with little CO2 cartridges. They are being used by hunters here to send up their catches. Not as personal markers.

I believe in Europe they use a yellow safety sausage to indicate that there is a problem with the dive. They used this on Deep Sea Detectives when they did the Blue Hole dive too and it seemed to work well. Your idea is kind of taking this to the next level by having something specifically to indicate the need for air rather then just the more general 'we've got a problem'.

From talking with Tech Divers and reading a lot I think it varies quite a bit. It seems to all be in the planning. Support divers aren't new per se but they are sometimes present. I have read the book you are talking about and I can say for sure that Tech diving has come a LONG way in the few short years since the death of the Rouses.
