Makes you think about swimming in local lakes

http://www.wftv.com/health/14231993/detail.html

It is always a unbearable to loose a kid, but to loose one doing what kids do and love to do makes it even more unbearable. My prayers are with these good people.

Is a Real Tragedy to the children and their families and friends.

But, as far as causing anyone to not swim in a lake, as the article says, the problem is "exraordinarily rare". I suspect that far more people have been killed or injured going to and from the lake than have fallen to this disease. But, those don't make the news media.

Life has always been, is now and always will be a risky business. Another real tragedy is that information available to the public would rather play on general fear than give useful risk information. A safety guy was telling me last week that in the city where he works at least one person dies every work day in traffic collisions. But, other than the obituary section no mention is made of it except momentarily by the traffic helicopter.

This problem is a alot more prevalent in Florida...I know from experience that it is a real problem down there..my brother developed a similar problem with swimmer's ear...but I really can't understand why anybody would want to swim in a Florida lake, not only because of this but getting eaten by a gator can ruin your day.

Ive had 100-200+ dives in Florida lakes..

Usually when there is an algae bloom there will be signs posted..

Also, if you are diving it would be a lot harder to get the water up your nose and something like pro plugs could prevent anything from getting into your ears..

I aint scurred

Not to sound like a smart @$$ but if you lost a child in a car accident would you quit driving your other children? I think maybe better precautions would be in order instead of taking away something as wonderful as the water...... and there are many wonderful lakes. There are dangers EVERYWHERE....and as a mother who has lost a child, its hard, but you HAVE to keep living and do your best to protect your children without taking them captive in a house and never experiencing the world......look at Steve Erwin...rare but it happened...this seems to be in that same category.

This does seem like an incredibly rare tragedy. Odds are probably better that you'd get struck by lightning.
